What to Expect from Your First Online Therapy Session
Starting counseling can feel like a big step, especially when you are not sure what the process will look like. Knowing what to expect can make the first appointment feel a little more comfortable and help you begin with confidence.
Choose a private, comfortable space
Before your appointment, find a quiet place where you can speak openly without interruptions. Headphones can provide additional privacy, and it is helpful to let others know that you will be unavailable during your session.
Check your technology
A few minutes before the appointment, check your internet connection, camera, microphone, and device battery. Keep your therapist’s contact information nearby in case you experience a technical problem.
The first session is a conversation
Your first counseling session is an opportunity for us to get acquainted. We will talk about what brought you to counseling, the concerns you would like to address, and what you hope will be different as a result of our work together. You can also ask questions about the counseling process, privacy, scheduling, or anything else that will help you feel more at ease.
You set the pace
You do not have to share everything at once. Counseling is a collaborative process, and trust develops over time. We will move at a pace that feels respectful and manageable while identifying practical goals for your care.
For couples
In couples counseling, both partners have space to describe their experiences and concerns. Early sessions often focus on understanding patterns, clarifying shared goals, and creating a foundation for healthier communication. The purpose is not to decide who is right or wrong, but to help both partners feel heard and begin working toward meaningful change.
After the session
It can be helpful to take a few quiet minutes afterward to reflect on the conversation. You may notice new thoughts or emotions, and you may leave with something to consider or practice before the next appointment. Progress is not always immediate or perfectly linear; small, consistent steps can still be meaningful.
