Is This Therapist the Right Fit? What to Notice in a Consultation

Finding the right therapist is an important decision. Training and experience matter, but so does the way you feel in conversation with the person who may be supporting you through vulnerable or difficult work.

That is why I begin with a complimentary 15-minute consultation. It gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, answer practical questions, and consider whether working together feels like a good fit.

During a consultation, you may want to notice:

• Do I feel heard and treated with respect?

• Can this therapist explain their approach in a way that makes sense to me?

• Do they have experience with the concerns I want to address?

• Do I feel comfortable asking questions or expressing uncertainty?

• Do the practical details—virtual sessions, scheduling, fees, and availability—fit my needs?

You do not need to share your full story during an initial consultation. A general description of what you hope will change is usually enough to begin. You are also welcome to ask how therapy may be structured, what a typical session is like, and how progress is discussed.

A good therapeutic fit does not mean that every conversation will be easy. Therapy can involve honest reflection and meaningful challenge. However, you should feel that the process is collaborative, that your goals matter, and that you are being met with care rather than judgment.

It is also completely appropriate to decide that a therapist is not the right fit. That decision is not a failure—it is useful information that can help you continue your search with greater clarity.

I currently provide virtual therapy for adults and couples throughout Florida. If you would like to learn more, you may schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation through the Contact page. I look forward to speaking with you.
